What is Centroid Triangle ?

The triangle centroid calculator finds the coordinate average of three vertices. For a genuine triangle, that point is where the three medians meet. It is also the balance point of an ideal flat triangular sheet with uniform thickness and density, making the idea useful in geometry and simple mechanics problems.

This page accepts three x,y coordinate pairs and returns a pair of centroid coordinates. Its current display rounds both coordinates to the nearest whole number. That rounding is important when a vertex contains decimals or the exact centroid is fractional: the shown point is an approximation and may not be adequate for a precise drawing or calculation.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose a single coordinate system and identify the three vertices. Keep the x and y directions, origin and units consistent for all points.
  2. Enter the first vertex as X 1 and Y 1, the second as X 2 and Y 2, and the third as X 3 and Y 3. Negative coordinates are valid when a point lies to the negative side of the chosen origin.
  3. Choose Calculate. The method adds the three x coordinates and divides by 3, then repeats that operation separately for y.
  4. Compare the displayed whole-number point with the unrounded formula below. Retain fractions or decimal coordinates separately if the next step needs more precision.
  5. Check that the three points form a nondegenerate triangle when a triangle’s geometric properties are relevant. The form does not test whether the vertices are distinct and noncollinear.

Formula Used

G = ((x₁ +x₂ +x₃)/3, (y₁ +y₂ +y₃)/3). For a nondegenerate triangle, the centroid divides each median in a 2:1 ratio measured from the vertex toward the opposite side.

Variables Explained

ItemMeaning
X 1,Y 1The horizontal and vertical coordinates of the first vertex. Keep the two values paired even though the averages are computed separately.
X 2,Y 2The second vertex in the same coordinate system and units. It need not lie in the positive quadrant.
X 3,Y 3The third vertex. Three points on a straight line have a coordinate average but do not enclose a triangular area.
Centroid GThe pair of coordinate means, written x first and y second. It is generally different from a circumcenter, incenter or orthocenter.
Displayed roundingThe controller rounds each result to a whole coordinate unit. It does not display exact thirds or retain a user-selected precision.

Worked Example

For vertices A=(0,0), B=(6,0) and C=(0,6), the x average is(0 +6 +0)/3 =2 and the y average is(0 +0 +6)/3 =2. The centroid is(2,2), which the whole-number display represents exactly.

The midpoint of BC is(3,3). Starting at A, the centroid(2,2) lies two thirds of the way along the median toward that midpoint. The remaining segment from the centroid to(3,3) is half the vertex-to-centroid segment, matching the 2:1 relationship.

For A=(0,0), B=(1,0) and C=(0,1), the exact centroid is(1/3,1/3). The current page rounds that to(0,0), which is a vertex rather than the exact interior balance point. Use the unrounded formula when interpreting this small triangle.

Negative coordinates work in the same way. For(−3,1), (3,1) and(0,7), the centroid is((−3 +3 +0)/3,(1 +1 +7)/3)=(0,3). There is no need to make every coordinate positive before calculating.

Why Use This Calculator?

For a nondegenerate triangle, the exact centroid lies inside the triangle. If a rounded display appears on an edge or at a vertex, check the unrounded averages before deciding that the geometric property has failed. Coarse rounding can move the shown point substantially when the triangle is small relative to the coordinate unit.

The result is independent of vertex order. Swapping A and B changes neither coordinate sum. Translating all vertices by the same vector translates the centroid by that vector; scaling all coordinates uniformly scales it by the same factor. These relationships provide useful checks on a drawing or spreadsheet.

The balance-point interpretation assumes uniform material. A triangular panel with a heavy attachment or varying thickness can have a different center of mass. This page also uses ordinary planar coordinates. Averaging latitude and longitude directly is not a general method for finding a geographic-area centroid on the curved Earth.

Common Mistakes

    • Do not average all six numbers into one value. The x and y coordinates require separate means.
    • Do not confuse a median with a perpendicular bisector; they define different triangle centers.
    • Do not treat a whole-number display as an exact fractional centroid.
    • Do not assume three valid numeric pairs necessarily form a triangle. Repeated or collinear vertices need a separate geometry check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does vertex order matter?

No. The same three x values and the same three y values are added regardless of order. Keep each point’s original coordinates together for clarity, but the final means do not depend on which vertex is called first.

Why does my graph show a different balance point?

Check coordinate entry and display rounding first. This page returns whole numbers, so a fractional centroid can appear displaced. For precise plotting, use the exact coordinate averages rather than the rounded label.

Is the centroid the center of the circumscribed circle?

Generally no. The circumcenter is defined by perpendicular bisectors and equal distances from the vertices. The centroid is defined by medians. They coincide in special cases such as an equilateral triangle, not in every triangle.

Can I use this for three points on a line?

The arithmetic still gives their coordinate average, but there is no nonzero triangular area. Interpret it as a point average, not the interior centroid of a genuine triangular lamina.
