What is Land Area?

The land area calculator finds the area of a rectangular plot from its width and length. Each side may be entered in millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches or feet; the measurements are first normalized to metres.

The page then reports square metres and also calculates square feet, square yards and acres. It suits a rectangular lawn, floor, garden bed or preliminary site estimate. Boundaries that bend, taper or contain several sections need a survey or a shape-by-shape calculation.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the width and length at right angles. Select the correct unit beside each measurement; the two sides may use different units.
  2. Choose Calculate. Both lengths are converted to metres before they are multiplied.
  3. Read the square-metre result. Use the other returned units when preparing a purchase or comparing a property description.

For a large or valuable parcel, check the deed and a professional survey. A tape-measure rectangle cannot resolve legal boundaries, slope, easements or curved edges.

Formula Used

Area in m² = width in metres × length in metres

The page uses exact length definitions: 1 inch = 0.0254 m and 1 foot = 0.3048 m. It then uses 1 m² = 10.7639104167 ft², 1 m² = 1.1959900463 yd² and 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m².

Both length factors must be applied before multiplication. Area factors are squared relationships, so a linear conversion factor cannot simply be used once on an already calculated area.

Variables Explained

TermMeaning on this page
widthCrosswise side of the rectangle in the selected length unit.
lengthEnd-to-end side perpendicular to the width.
m²Square metres obtained after normalizing both sides.
ft²Square feet; approximately 10.76391 for each square metre.
yd²Square yards; approximately 1.19599 for each square metre.
acreArea unit equal to exactly 43,560 international square feet.

Worked Example

Take a rectangular plot 20 m wide and 30 m long:

20 m × 30 m = 600 m²

That same area is approximately 6,458.35 ft², 717.59 yd² or 0.1483 acre. If the width were entered as 2,000 cm instead, it would first become 20 m and the result would remain 600 m².

Why Use This Calculator?

The result is a flat, plan-view area. It can help estimate turf, paving or broad material coverage, but an order normally needs a waste allowance and may need deductions for buildings, paths or openings. Sloped ground can also have a larger surface area than its horizontal plan.

Measurement uncertainty grows with the plot. If each boundary is approximate, multiplying many displayed digits gives false confidence. Record how the sides were measured and round the final area to a practical precision.

An acre is an area, not a required shape. A 0.1483-acre rectangle can have many different side lengths. This page does not infer boundary lengths from acreage and does not establish ownership or legal property size.

Handling a compound plot: imagine an L-shaped garden that can be split into a 20 m × 30 m rectangle and a 5 m × 8 m rectangle. Calculate 600 m² and 40 m² separately, then add them for 640 m². If the smaller section is a cutout rather than an extension, subtract its 40 m² instead. A sketch with labeled sides prevents the most common add-versus-subtract mistake.

For material estimates, match the coverage unit to the supplier’s label. A product quoted per square metre can use the m² result directly; a product quoted per square foot should use the ft² result. Depth belongs in a separate volume calculation. Multiplying area by a material depth can estimate volume, but both quantities must first use compatible units.

Common Mistakes

    • Leaving one side in feet while labeling it as metres.
    • Using length × width for a triangular or irregular boundary without dividing or splitting shapes.
    • Applying a linear feet-to-metres factor directly to square feet.
    • Assuming plan area includes slope and terrain surface.
    • Ordering exactly the calculated coverage with no allowance for cutting or waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can width and length use different units?

Yes. Select the actual unit for each side. The calculator converts both measurements to metres before multiplication.

Does the result work for an irregular plot?

Only as an approximation if you replace the shape with a rectangle. A better method divides the plot into measured shapes, adds their areas and checks the boundary with a survey when needed.

How many square metres are in an acre?

One acre based on the international foot equals 4,046.8564224 square metres.

Does this measure sloped land surface?

No. It gives the horizontal rectangular area from two side lengths. Surface area over a slope requires elevation or slope measurements.

Why are area conversion factors different from length factors?

Area has two dimensions. When a length unit changes, its factor is applied in both directions, so the corresponding area factor is squared.

Should I subtract buildings or paths?

Subtract excluded rectangles or other measured shapes if you need usable lawn or material coverage rather than total parcel area.

Is this suitable for a legal property record?

No. Legal area depends on surveyed boundaries and local records. Use this result for planning and checking, not to replace a deed or professional survey.
